Pauline Dueck was born in a farming community in Southern Manitoba, spending her childhood riding horses, mucking about in the garden, and enjoying lots of creative hobbies. Her high school art teacher encouraged her to pursue art as a career, but the fear of being a “starving artist” prompted her to opt for an education in veterinary technology, evolving into a 20-year career working with livestock in Alberta. In 2008, a career change into home staging, and a move to Vancouver Island, inspired Pauline to begin acrylic painting. Through practice, experimentation and taking inspiring workshops from some of the Island’s finest artists, Pauline has developed her own bold acrylic style. Her subjects frequently reflect her agricultural roots, featuring animals and bold florals, often with a whimsical twist.  Her intimate association with animals and understanding of their anatomy is reflected in her detailed depictions. She also paints dramatic water scenes, inspired by living near the Pacific Ocean and spending winters in Mexico. Pauline recently received an Award of Excellence by the jurors of the 2021 Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show, and was also voted the People’s Choice Winner. She was the People’s Choice Runner Up at the same show in 2018.  She is an active member of the Cowichan Valley Arts Council, having curated their annual CV Fine Arts Show, as well as numerous other shows, for the past 6 years. She does workshops locally as well as private acrylic painting lessons in her home studio in Cobble Hill.
