Lynn Harnish

Lynn Harnish is a self-taught artist that started her creative journey on the prairies in central Canada. Focusing on interior design for many years, she and her family moved to Vancouver Island in the mid 90’s. She continued with design but always had a dream to paint full time. Lynn discovered encaustic painting and fell in love with this medium. It is the oldest form of painting dating back thousands of years, yet most people have never experienced its dream-like qualities. Pigments are suspended in over 20 layers of melted beeswax and resin, fusing each layer with the next. Lynn decided to leave her design business and put all her energy into creating one of a kind encaustic works. Lynn has her studio on her property where she resides with her husband Richard, surrounded by nature that still continues to inspire her.

I love to create; I always have. My medium has changed over the past 30 years but my passion for the artistic process continues. In my studio my latest medium is Encaustic. I love allowing each piece to unfold and emerge. The paint, the wax, the tools all give me a feeling of being both the artist and the art itself. I love the smell of beeswax and the feeling of the wax on my hands, resting under my finger nails. Through the process of encaustic what emerges is often unpredictable. Each piece I have created with purpose and yet the magic of the medium has lead me to these final images. There's always a sense of surprise and wonder. I am creating happy accidents when things develop differently than I had expected... and that's the magic. When people view my paintings, I hope it connects them with a feeling more than just an image.
